stating "One of the most extraordinary images in the history of flight: Wilbur Wright and his pupil Paul Tissandier soar over three horse-drawn carriages and their drivers in January 1909. In the background, a horse starts at the plane, unaware that his role as a method of transport is on the wane, and that he is witnessing the future."

BETTS'S PORTABLE TERRESTRIAL GLOBE
English, late 4th quarter 19th century, printed in the cartouche "BY ROYAL LETTERS PATENT, BETTS'S PORTABLE TERRESTRIAL GLOBE, COMPILED FROM THE BEST AUTHORITIES, British Empire coloured red. LONDON: GEORGE PHILIP & SON Ltd, 32 FLEET STREET. LIVERPOOL: PHILIP & SON & NEPHEW Ltd, 20 CHURCH STREET. Printed in Great Britain." A terrestrial collapsing globe with 8 colored lithographed gores, printed on linen and stiched over a black japanned umbrella-type frame. The land features include mountain ranges and major rivers, and the Greenwich meridian. This unusual globe is in good overall condition, slightly dust soiled and with some fraying at the edges. Betts died circa 1863 and the publication of the globe was taken up by George Philip & Son in 1880, who probably purchased the stock of the business.
