image AMUNDSEN'S MATCHBOX BAGS On 30th March Bonhams hosts the 'Polar Sale: Scott and Amundsen Centenary'. We like all of it but have picked Lot No. 88 "A pair of waterproof matchbox bags with aluminium screw-lids (length 220mm.) as supplied for Amundsen's expedition to the South Pole, together with nine boxes of matches. Roald Amundsen tells us in his book 'The South Pole' (London, 1912) "A match factory gave us all the safety matches we wanted. They were packed so securely that we could quite well have towed the cases after us in the sea all the way and found the matches perfectly dry on arrival." It's interesting that elsewhere in his book the victor of the South Pole also writes: 'I may say that this is the greatest factor—the way in which the expedition is equipped—the way in which every difficulty is foreseen, and precautions taken for meeting or avoiding it. Victory awaits him who has everything in order — luck, people call it. Defeat is certain for him who has neglected to take the necessary precautions in time; this is called bad luck'. Cold. image PELIKAN M1005 DEMONSTRATOR A lovely pen that has to now be bought aftermarket. It uses the Pelikan differential piston mechanism (patented in 1929). The 'Demonstrator' allows you to see the mechanism 'in action' every time you fill the fountain pen. The nib is made of 18 carat gold, entirely covered by rhodium, to give a silver impression. The clip and the rings are palladium plated. To obtain the completely transluscent barrel, every part of the production machine has to be thoroughly cleaned in a timeconsuming process, so that not a single color particle remains. Direct link
