On a visit to Shanghai's live insect market, British sculptress Kelly Allsopp was at once repulsed and intrigued by what she saw. Suspended at every height hung beautiful split bamboo cages containing single insects, praying mantis, crickets and gem coloured beetles. Caged and trapped, the creatures’ moribund limbs twitched in a futile attempt to escape. It is this conflict of emotion that inspired this bronze hornet. Listing desperately to one side in what could be its last tiny death throes, we think it an artwork of sublime beauty and pathos. Created through the technique of lost wax bronze casting and polished by hand, the bronze hornet is available only from 20ltd.com. Only 20 editions will ever be made.
