One of the most iconic works of confectionary in history, the everlasting gobstopper first appeared on screen in Mel Stuart’s 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Commissioned exclusively by 20ltd.com for Christmas 2009, glass artist James Lethbridge, a graduate of the Royal College of Art and known for his surreal and almost alien pieces of sculptural glass, has now ingeniously created a handmade glass replica of Wonka’s famous sweet as a Christmas decoration. The faithful recreation of the gobstopper demanded all of Lethbridge’s skill: to accurately replicate its shape, the extremely rare-coloured borosilicate glass (known more commonly as the highly tough and durable Pyrex) had to be manipulated using traditional flame-working techniques. This requires using a gas/oxygen torch to reach temperatures of 1300 degrees centigrade. One of the most unique and charming pieces ever to hang from a tree, the Everlasting Gobstopper is available exclusively through 20ltd.com and is limited to only 20 editions.
