French artist Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889), painted The Birth of Venus in 1863. It was shown in Paris and bought by Napoleon III for his own personal collection. The original now resides in the Museé d'Orsay in Paris. A smaller version, painted by Cabanel in 1875, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Howard Schatz's image, The Birth of Venus is an homage to Alexandre Cabanel. To make this image he photographed a dancer with feathered wings underwater to make the "angels." For the main figure, he photographed another dancer on the surface of the pool, in a few inches of water.
